Causes of Aphasia

  1. Stroke:  The leading cause of Aphasia, strokes can disrupt blood flow to the brain, leading to damage in areas responsible for language processing.  Approximately one-third of stroke survivor experience some form of aphasia.
  2. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI):  Injuries to the head can causes significant damage to the brain's language center, resulting in aphasia.  This can occur from accident, falls, or sport injures.
  3. Brain Infections:  Infections such as encephalitis can causes inflammation and damage to the brain, potentially leading to aphasia.
  4. Brain Tumors:  Tumors can exert pressure on language center or disrupt normal brain function, leading to aphasia.  The effect may vary depending on the tumor's location and size.
  5. Neurodegeneration Diseases:  Conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia can progressively damage the brain area involving in language, resulting in aphasia over time.

Impact on Relationship

The inability to communicate can profoundly affect personal relationships. Individuals with aphasia may withdraw from social interactions due to embarrassment or frustration, which can lead to feelings of loneliness.  Family members and friends may also find it challenging to maintain conversations, leading to a breakdown in communication and emotional connections.

Emotional and Psychological Impact

Living with aphasia can lead to a range of emotional challenges, including frustration, anxiety, and depression.  The struggle to communicate effectively can create a sense of loss and impact overall mental well-being.  Many individuals with aphasia report feelings of anger and helplessness due to their communication difficulties.
